Wet Room vs Shower Tray: Which Is Right for Your Bathroom?
Published 2 February 2026 · WEPRO Renovations
Short answer: a shower tray is cheaper and faster to install and suits most standard bathrooms. A wet room — fully tanked, level-access — costs more but is more watertight, more accessible and feels more spacious. The right choice depends on your floor, your budget and how you'll use the room.
Quick comparison
| | Shower tray | Wet room | |---|---|---| | Typical cost | Lower | Higher (from ~€3,499) | | Waterproofing | Tray + sealed enclosure | Full-room tanking | | Accessibility | Step/lip into tray | Level access — no step | | Feeling of space | Defined enclosure | Open, larger feel | | Best for | Standard family bathrooms | Accessible needs, small or premium bathrooms |
When a shower tray makes sense
- You want the most cost-effective option.
- The bathroom is a standard layout with no accessibility requirement.
- You prefer a contained shower area that keeps the rest of the floor dry.
When a wet room wins
- You need level access — no step — for mobility or future-proofing.
- The bathroom is small and you want it to feel bigger.
- You want the most watertight format, with the whole floor and walls tanked as one system.
- You're considering the Housing Adaptation Grant — accessible wet rooms can qualify for funding of up to €40,000 (income-dependent; approval rests with your local authority).
The thing that actually matters: waterproofing
Both formats are only as good as their waterproofing. A wet room demands full membrane tanking, correctly formed falls to the drain and sealed junctions — done badly, it leaks; done properly, it's the most reliable bathroom you can own. That's why it's specialist work and why ours carries a 10-year waterproofing guarantee.
